Our Farm

Our Farm

At Mount Virginia, we take our inspiration from nature. We selectively harvest forest plants to promote growth and supplementally grow plants, both of which we make into our products.

Our farming approach starts with companion planting. A forest includes many different types of species growing together and with different purposes that support the ecosystem. Where we plant food, we plant like a forest. This means we plant multiple types of plants together in the same bed (our adaptation of the indigenous planting technique called Three Sisters pictured above). By doing so, we grow more in a smaller area, grow better plants because they support each other by serving their unique purpose to the whole bed, and create habitats that benefit our keystone pollinator species as much as they benefit us.

This means our plants are not grown with pesticides, because each plant in its own companion planted home is protected from harmful pests by its neighbors.

This also means our plants are grown using less water, because we have more density of plants in a small area holding water in the soil.

Our Farm is home to animals too

Our farm is home to animals including chickens and donkeys (and dogs who consider themselves donkeys) who help with weed control and fertilizer (pictured above).

Our farm also includes fruit trees and bushes, many of which were planted with support from our angels - friends and family who purchased a tree in memory of someone they love.

When you buy our baked goods, you are choosing to eat something inspired by plants we can grow, and farm fresh doesn't stop at the produce section. Just like a carrot is more flavorful when you grow it in the garden, so too are our baked goods. Treat yourself, family, and friends to a Mount Virginia baked good so you can enjoy what you eat to the fullest.
